What is this? I had made for myself, over a year ago, a random name generator. I mean, not the name part. That part is complicated. So like the spineless lamprey I am, I suckered right on to Behind the Name. So what do I bring to the table?

Ethnicity. The US, where my story (stories? Oy, I’m so slow, I KNOW!) is quite the cosmopolitan place, with many immigrants calling this place home. I wanted to represent that in a statistical fashion because that’s how I neurose nerd out. Unfortunately, I did not save my sources, but I likely used US Census data for this. Don’t quote me on this exact link. I definitely didn’t go into the back where they sell the counterfeits. I then had to limit it to the options Behind the Name could allow me to select.

I kept this app on my phone so I could always yell at it “RANDOM NAME” every time I needed some person to be named in my story. The app would then select, at random, an ethnicity, weighted towards US representation. I could then select a preferred gender or let the app decide.

So I’ve decided to make this app available to all. Right now, it just has USA numbers. But I’ve made it extensible. All someone needs to do is provide me with reliable numbers for representation from other countries. But the name options do need to marry up to the check boxes that Behind the Name provides. That part is important.

So, without further ado: The App!
