Patter

I presented my research in Philadephia, and my colleagues presented research that I collaborated (ie, I was the engine, in tech speak). I think it went very well.

I got my manuscript back from my editor, so I have no excuse not to buckle down and put out an ARC. Some big concepts may need to be reworked, but I’m hoping for that in about a month.

I’d love it if you share interesting things that YOU are reading or doing. Send me a message about a great book you’ve just read or something else that other UF fans are likely to geek out about, and I’ll share it with my newsletter. BE SURE to sign the email the way you want your name to appear. Otherwise, I’ll make it anonymous.

Don’t hesitate to hit me up with suggestions or complaints and the like.

Quid Pro Non

Friends With Death by James Wright

This is some fine semi-absurd, dry British humor at its finest. Fans of Monty Python will enjoy this pull at loose threads in society that never breaks character.
But, deeper than that, it explores the loneliness created by our modern world. But not just a single version of loneliness. Each character has their own flavor of loneliness they explore. It is fitting that they never discuss their feelings with one another, just stiff upper lip through it all in the classic British way.
But, of course, to survive, they must band together, learn to trust each other and form a sort of family.
Or die trying. This is a zombie apocalypse, after all. Let’s get real.

Here comes a new challenger!

Jane Bond: Some Assembly Required by V.R. Tapscott

This was a fun romp with some physical comedy at first, but then it takes a surprising turn into deeper feelings. Betrayal, abandonment, loneliness, loss, identity. These are all things I enjoy throughly, and was pretty surprised to find here. Still waters may run deep, but apparently this babbling brook does too.
Other than that, there’s a lot of good natured comedy and high adventure that packages the deeper exploration, so it will never feel like drama for drama’s sake, which is too easy a trap to fall into when exploring weighty things.
Don’t be put off by the apparent silliness, there’s substance here.

Don’t Kill the Drunken Sailor (Law and Plunder) by J.L. Henry

Bringing the law to a pirate enclave is a hard life. And if Charles Gates doesn’t solve his first case fast, a short life as well.

New Cayenne just got a head of a police department that doesn’t exist. There’s never been a need for one up until now. Privateers don’t tend to go much for due process.

Now the young Republic of Pirates wants to be recognized as a proper sovereign state, and things need to change. Not everyone is willing to give Charles Gates, the new (and only) policeman a chance. And when a murder case lands on his doorstep, with him as the chief suspect, he’s not got long to find the real culprit before they take him to dance with the hangman’s noose.

His only help is the reckless, lawless Nathaniel, so wild even the other pirates want nothing to do with him, paying off his debt to the community as an unwilling assistant.

As the bodies pile up, can Charles find out who’s really responsible? Will New Cayenne survive the truth? And more importantly, will he?

‘Don’t Kill the Drunken Sailor’ is a riproaring murder mystery, packed full of grog, buccaneers, and rum goings on in the Caribbean at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.

Don’t Forget!

An imPerfect Samhain by C.N. Rowan
A short romp through loss, despair, structural injustice, sexism, and violence without justice. Despite the dark topic, the offbeat humor and loveable characters and their interactions with each other and the world provide a complementing counterbalance. This compels the reader to unwind the bizarre mystery when otherwise it would hit so heavy one would need to put it down for breathers. The extra bit of history makes for a rabbit hole into further research on topics you may have never known about.
